The Busy Mind: How Distraction Pulls Us Away from Our Purpose (And How to Come Home Again)
A busy mind is not just a modern inconvenience—it is one of the greatest obstacles to living a fulfilled, meaningful, internally aligned life. Most people don’t realise this because we have become so accustomed to noise, pressure, and overstimulation that they feel normal. But the truth is, much of the world we move through is designed to pull our focus away from what truly matters.
Between digital distractions, social expectations, and the constant demand to “be more,” we are often left disconnected from ourselves—disconnected from our purpose, our wisdom, and our ability to act with clarity.
And this disconnection comes with consequences: overwhelm, exhaustion, confusion, and a sense that no matter how much we do, it is never enough.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
There is a path back to centre.
There is a way to quiet the noise and reconnect with your true essence.
And it begins with understanding why the mind becomes so busy in the first place.
Why We Are Taught to Look Outside Ourselves
From a young age, most of us are conditioned to seek external approval—because, on a survival level, being liked or accepted has historically meant safety. Parents, teachers, and society encourage behaviours that make us “good,” “polite,” or “successful.”
This shapes us far more deeply than we realise.
We learn to:
behave according to social expectations
prioritise others’ perceptions
achieve externally so we are seen as valuable
Without meaning to, we build a life based on external measurement, not inner truth.
But here’s the problem:
We can never truly know what others think of us.
And even if we did—their opinions are reflections of themselves, not reflections of who we are.
This creates a painful gap between:
who we think we should be
and who we truly are
Within this gap lies dissatisfaction, disharmony, and frustration. It is the birthplace of the busy mind—the inner tension of trying to be something we are not.
The Modern Mind: Overstimulated and Under-Centred
As if this ancient survival conditioning isn’t enough, we now live in a digital era where our attention is treated as a commodity. Our phones, apps, and screens are designed to hook us, distract us, and activate constant dopamine loops.
This keeps the mind perpetually:
scanning
comparing
consuming
reacting
never resting
We have more information than ever before, yet we feel more lost.
We have more ways to “connect,” yet we feel more disconnected.
In a world of advancement, we have drifted far from our roots—far from the inner stillness that allows us to hear ourselves and act from our deepest truth.
A Personal Story: When My Mind Became Too Busy to Bear
In my early 30s, I took on more than I could chew. Even now, when I list all the things I was doing, people shake their heads in disbelief—and honestly, sometimes I do too. I was carrying an enormous load, driven by both external expectations and my internal pressure to fulfill my purpose.
You see, we all feel our purpose on some level.
There is an inner pull—a whisper, a longing, a spark.
It pushes us to explore, achieve, create, or strive.
But when we are disconnected from our true selves, we cannot interpret this pull correctly. We don’t know what it’s trying to tell us. So instead, we grasp at what society offers:
Career success?
Adventure and travel?
Social status?
Achievements to prove our worth?
We collect experiences and accomplishments, but the inner thirst remains unquenched.
So we push harder.
And harder.
Until the body or mind can no longer keep up.
And for me, that moment came in the form of collapse.
I broke down.
The overwhelm, pressure, and constant doing finally caught up, and I was forced to confront a question I had never truly asked:
“Why am I living like this?”
This was the turning point of my life.
In that moment of collapse, I made myself a promise—to find myself.
My true self.
Not the version created for others, but the version born from my soul.
Daily meditation gave me the calm and space I needed to hear my inner voice again. Slowly, trust was rebuilt. Awareness grew. My path began to reveal itself—not from striving, but from listening. And that guidance led me to train within the Lineage of King Salomon… which eventually led me to become a Guide myself.
Now, I help others find the clarity, purpose, and peace that changed my life so profoundly.
Returning to the Fundamentals of Health
I want to include these simple fundamentals, as they all play a part in creating and maintaining a sense of harmony and balance. When we simplify our lives, we can actually achieve more and be a greater influence.
Sovereign Ipsissimus Hideto Nakagome—Lineage Holder and Master Healer in the Lineage of King Salomon—teaches five core components of good health that help us cultivate balance and calm:
Nutrition, Movement, Breath, Environment, and Thoughts.
These principles may sound simple…
but they are not simplistic.
They are foundational.
When life feels overwhelming, chaotic, or directionless, returning to these five areas anchors your energy and rebuilds your internal world.
1. Nutrition – Nourish Your Body to Nourish Your Mind
Return to whole foods. Cook from home. Eat organic vegetables, quality proteins, nourishing fats, and plenty of clean water.
Fasting, when appropriate, supports clarity, detoxification, and mental calm.
2. Movement – Move Like Your Life Depends on It (Because It Does)
10,000 steps per day is a simple but powerful baseline.
Add weight-bearing exercises, HIIT training, and—if I were still your Personal Trainer—mobility as a non-negotiable ritual.
Movement clears the mind, strengthens the body, and increases resilience.
3. Breath – The Most Undervalued Medicine
Breathwork may sound too simple to matter, yet it is one of the quickest ways to shift the nervous system. Combining deep, conscious breathing with yoga, chi-do, or mobility practices changes your entire inner state.
4. Environment – The Energies You Live Inside
Your environment is not neutral.
It shapes your physiology, emotions, and thoughts.
Consider:
physical clutter
toxic people
chaotic workspaces
emotional stressors
nature exposure
Create spaces that support your highest self, not drain it.
5. Thoughts – Your Mind Creates Your World
Thoughts influence actions.
Actions shape your life.
This is why meditation is essential—not optional. Know your mind and how it functions best. Side note: the above components affect your mental health. Mind is VITAL.
As an Initiate in the Lineage of King Salomon, I use ancient rituals daily that lift my awareness to higher planes of thought. They are powerful tools that help me navigate life with clarity, purpose, and groundedness.
The Modern Mystery School Perspective on Success
At the Modern Mystery School, success isn’t measured by wealth, status, or external approval. True success is measured by:
How aligned you are with your purpose;
How connected you are to your true self;
How much light you bring to the world around you (do you share your light?);
The degree to which you are living in JOY
When you know yourself, everything you do becomes more meaningful.
You stop chasing.
You start creating.
You stop reacting.
You start choosing.
You stop surviving.
You start thriving.
This is the power of inner clarity.
How to Quiet Your Mind and Reconnect With Your True Essence
You don’t need to escape to a mountain or meditate for hours.
Start small. Start now.
Here are grounded steps you can take today:
• A 3-minute grounding breath
Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 6—repeat for three cycles.
• A 1-minute “mind dump”
Write down everything swirling in your head. Empty the mental clutter.
• Step into nature
20 minutes in fresh air can reset your entire nervous system.
• Attend a meditation class
Your nervous system needs support. Community helps.
• Begin a deeper path
If you’re called to go further, Initiation and ritual practices can open profound inner clarity.
Final Thoughts
My mission is simple:
To help you remember who you truly are.
Your inner world is waiting for you—not the version shaped by society, fear, or survival… but the divine, purposeful, powerful being you were born to be.
If you would like to explore this further, I highly recommend this 30-minute video featuring Ips. Hideto Nakagome, and I invite you to join me for weekly Max Meditation™ in Hobart or connect with me for deeper training.
Your calm, clarity, and purpose are not luxuries.
They are your birthright.
And I am here to help you reclaim them.
